What is ACT ?

The ACT originally an abbreviation of the American College Testing readiness assessment. The test is one of the standardized tests, along with the SAT, for an assessment of high school achievement and college readiness in the United States, and some other universities across the globe.

Over the years, the ACT has witnessed a radical increase in the number of test takers, and in 2011 it surpassed the SAT for the first time in total test takers. All the four-year undergraduate colleges and universities in the U.S. accept the ACT as a valid exam for assessment but different institutions place different emphases on standardized tests such as the ACT, compared to other factors of evaluation such as class rank, GPA, essays and extracurricular activities.

There are four main papers on the ACT if you do act exam registration, each of which is scored individually on a scale of 1–36. A Composite score is also provided which is the whole number average of the four scores. The ACT is more widely taken in the Midwestern, Rocky Mountain, and Southern United States, while the SAT is more popular on the East and West coasts. Recently, however, the ACT is being used more on the East Coast as well.

When to take the ACT ?

Most students will take the ACT in their junior or senior years of high school.

The ACT is offered four to six times a year, depending on the state, in the United States. It is offered in September, October, December, February, April and June and is normally conducted on a Saturday . The test can also be taken in other countries, however availability is lesser than in the United States and the test date availability needs to be closely monitored.

What is the format of the ACT exam ?

The ACT is divided into four multiple choice subject tests, namely English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science reasoning. Subject test scores range from 1 to 36. The English, mathematics, and reading tests also have subscores ranging from 1 to 18. (Note that the subject score is not the sum of the subscores.) The composite score is the average of all four tests. In addition, students taking the writing test receive a writing score ranging from 2 to 12, a combined English/writing score ranging from 1 to 36 (based on the writing score and English score), and one to four comments on the essay from the essay scorers. The writing score does not affect the composite score.

Student Speak

EduAims was of tremendous help to me during the entire admissions consulting process, especially when it came to preparation for the SAT exam. I was a bit weak on the math side but their expert mentor, Mr. Wharton, guided me and helped me score a perfect 800 on the Math section of the SAT as well as on the SAT II. For anyone considering studying in the US or anywhere else, I would strongly suggest them.
